Glass characteristics – why it is dangerous to birds

Three characteristics of glass make it dangerous to birds:

  1. Reflective: Especially in the daytime, the glass will reflect the normal scene, causing the bird to hit the glass.

The American Bird Conservation Association has researched and developed guidelines for glass designs to protect birds. These designs have been scientifically proven to be a visual deterrent. The bird anti-strike glass pattern is defined as a pair of horizontal elements (separated such as dots, lines, outlines, etc.) by no more than 2 inches with vertical elements separated by no more than 4 inches. Birds in flight see these visually and will avoid collision accidents.
